You are listening to the Less Drama More Mama podcast, episode 381: Holiday Magic Your Kids Will Remember

This is Less Drama More Mama, the podcast for moms who want to feel calm, in control, and confident about how to handle anything life throws their way. If you’re ready to go from feeling frazzled and disrespected to feeling calm and connected, this is the podcast for you. I’m your host, Pam Howard.

Hi Mama! Welcome to the podcast, and thank you for tuning in today. I want to talk about something that’s been coming up a lot in my coaching sessions lately, and I’m guessing it’s on your mind too if you’re listening to this around the time it’s published, right before Thanksgiving. What I keep hearing is that you’re stressed and overwhelmed from before Thanksgiving all the way through Christmas. You’re shopping, wrapping, decorating, coordinating travel and parties and play dates. You’re worried about disappointing your kids. You’re comparing yourself to how your own mom did things. You’re trying to create a holiday that proves you thought of every detail. In my Damn Good Mama group, the word “magic” kept coming up again and again. One client shared that she takes on 99% of the responsibility for “bringing the magic” this time of year. Another said she feels like she’s failed to create a magical holiday when her son is disappointed in his gifts. They didn’t feel like they could truly exhale until Christmas morning was over.

I want to help you rethink what “magical” really means, because the version many moms feel pressured to create is costing you your presence, your joy, and your connection with your kids.
Now, I don’t celebrate Christmas myself, but I’ve supported so many moms who do, and the pattern is the same every year: the pressure builds, the stress builds, and the joy gets pushed aside.
From the outside, here’s what I see clearly: The “magic” you’re working so hard to manufacture is not the magic your kids actually need. What if a magical holiday isn’t something you create by getting every detail right? What if it’s simply the feeling of being with someone who’s calm, present, and genuinely happy? When I was in college, my dad asked me what I remembered most from my childhood. He was expecting me to say something about our trips to Disney World or some other big experience he’d worked hard to give me. Instead, I said, “The time you got angry when I accidentally set off the house alarm.” He couldn’t believe his ears.

That’s the thing about memory – kids aren’t keeping track of all the perfect moments we work so hard to create. But their bodies record how they felt around us. Whether they felt safe or stressed. Their little nervous systems are constantly syncing up with ours through co-regulation. Our nervous system state shapes theirs, not our effort or intentions or how much we care. And when you’re running on stress during the holidays, that becomes the emotional tone of the season for them, too. Calm connection is what creates the magic. That’s the gift your kids really want. That’s what they’ll remember. They remember the warmth, the safety, the playfulness, and your presence, not your performance. Performance looks like orchestrating the perfect gift reveal, managing everyone’s reactions, and documenting everything for social media to prove you did it right. It’s making sure the holiday looks a certain way from the outside. Presence looks like sitting on the floor playing with your kids instead of rushing to clean up the wrapping paper, and genuinely being there in the moment instead of mentally three steps ahead, worrying about what’s next. This shows up everywhere, including with Santa traditions. The question isn’t whether Santa is part of your family’s celebration – but whether you’re enjoying the tradition or you’re running yourself ragged trying to create something elaborate enough.

Try this simple nervous system check-in. What happens in your body when you think, “I have to make this magical.” Does your chest tighten? Does your breathing get shallow? Does your stomach clench? What emotion does it create? Now try, “The magic is in our connection.” What shifts for you? What emotion do you notice now? This holiday season, try to notice the thoughts that create pressure, stress, and overwhelm, and question whether those thoughts are actually true or useful. And prioritize self-regulation – your own calm, connected presence – above everything else. That creates the kind of magic that truly makes this season meaningful.

I hope this helps you head into the holidays feeling a little more grounded.
